Our Programmes

We continually look for ways in which we can deepen the impact that we have with the new mothers that we meet though our programmes. We work closely with our partners based in the communities to craft interventions that will support the young mothers in their care.

Mothers have graduated from pre-natal and babycare classes run by our partner organisations in 16 different venues in the Cape Flats from March 2018.

Equipping Mothers

This is our original programme started in 2018 with just 4 mothers attending an antenatal
class at the Maternity Unit in Retreat.

Personalised pre-natal and post-natal maternity gifts are given as incentives to the mothers
to attend these courses in early parenting skills.

Protecting Babies

In March 2023 the clinic sisters shared the struggle they have with encouraging moms to visit the clinic timeously for the required check-ups.

Packs are supplied as incentives and support and given to mothers who take their babies for clinic check-ups and vaccinations, support for babies who are born too soon and take-home packs to celebrate their goal weight milestone. (of just 1.7kgs)

Incentive packs including clothing, nappies, books and ECD toys given to mothers who take their babies for clinic check-ups and vaccinations.

During Covid from May 2020 to December 2022 9104 packs were gifted to mothers in need.

Average number of babies provided with emergency supplies since COVID.

Dressing Babies

This was started during severe Covid19 lockdown when mothers were reported as giving
birth with no access to clothes or blankets for their babies. Emergency packs of non-food
essentials including personalized clothing, toiletries, books and a blanket were handed out at
hospitals and clinics and even at some local community feeding programmes.

These are now gifted to the mothers of babies as a response to Fires and Floods and are
also prepared for partners who work with mothers who are victims of Gender-Based
Violence or extreme poverty.

Deepening the Impact

Listening closely to the mothers and community leaders that we have met through our programmes, and community leaders met during the Covid years, we have identified that the mothers need support to develop maternal-confidence – specifically in the areas of early stimulation for development and emotional support for themselves.

SmartMamas

SmartMamas are a peer-to-peer supportive sisterhood of new mothers who live near each other, and who speak the same language, to share their motherhood journey. These groups will be centred around Smart-Aunties who are generally mothers themselves know their communities and are known and trusted by the mothers in their communities. The relationship between the Smart-Aunty and the mothers is key to sustainable change for  the children.

Our support of these Smart-Aunties as they create Smart-Mama-clubs and playgroups with ECD toys, books, and early numeracy tools means that the moms will have the support of each other as well as access to informed advice and the tools and knowledge to guide their babies’ development to school readiness.
