Reflecting on last year

As the weather changes in Cape Town, and a fresh breeze is blowing in, we can feel the seasons changing. For some this inspires a thorough cleanup of their homes, and for others the start of new routines, for us, we took the time to reflect on our last financial year.

Looking at our operational numbers we are proud to share that the Thula Baba Project helped 1684mothers and babies last year:

  • The Equipping Mothers programme had 546 mothers complete 10-week antenatal or child care courses. These mothers were rewarded with a bucket including nappies, toiletries, clothing, blankets, books and ECD toys. We believe that in doing so, we help the mothers with the knowledge and tools to improve the outcomes for baby health and development.
  • Our new programme Protecting Babies incentivised 331 mothers to visit the clinic timeously for the required check-ups and vaccinations, with packs including clothing, nappies, books and ECD toys. 604 mothers of premature babies were supported with octopus-love while in hospital and take home packs to celebrate babies goal weight.
  • We helped 203 mothers and babies who were victims of gender-based violence, fires and floods  with the Dressing Babies programme. They were gifted emergency packs of non-food essentials including personalized clothing, toiletries, books and a blanket.

When we came together as a team last month during our strategy day, we concluded that it’s great that we had the opportunity to touch so many lives. But. But, there are so many more mothers in the Cape Flats that need the knowledge and tools that the Thula Baba Project distributes. So how can we continue to realize this growth? We are foremost so thankful to all the people that do support us already, it is incredible to see the amount of (physical) donations that come in. However, we have realised that in order for us to continue the growth we will need more (cash) funding.

So with taking this learning, and one of our organizational values, fun: we are introducing our first fundraising evening. This will be an evening filled with excitement. We will be having a quiz, a raffle and an auction hosted by the dynamic Mano Caldis. Again we have been fortunate that many organizations and individuals have been willing to donate prizes. But we still need you!

We would love to see you there with a group of friends (only R700 for 8 people, including wine & snack platter).
